Sinossi

I’m honestly not sure why I bothered to read this book. There were two factors which should have prevented it: the many, more ably written books I’ve already read about the tragic but groundbreaking first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, and the fact that I’ve been thoroughly disappointed by every b Leggi tutto
This is an example of a history book where the framing device becomes secondary to the study of the characters one of which is the favorite. Reinhold Messner clearly wants to write a biography of Jean-Antoine Carrel but for whatever reason chooses to contrast him with Edward Whymper who he is not as Leggi tutto
Great telling of the first ascent of the matterhorn, with details from many perspectives on the attempts leading to, the first successful summit, and the climbs that followed. Inspired by the characters surrounding the rock, especially the guide qualities of JA Carrell
