Sono storie aggrovigliate come le immagini che si vedono dai treni in corsa e che proprio in quella matassa, tuttavia, riescono a sigillare un attimo di verità: piccole scout che imparano a odiare, ragazze del college che imparano ad amare, e altre ragazze in esilio che scoprono cosa si può arrivare a fare quando si è affamati per davvero. A una vita di distanza dagli anni '60, e da quella ragazza sul bancone, "Bere caffè da un'altra parte" significa potersi inventare un futuro facendo i conti col passato. Come in un film di Spike Lee: per quanto tu possa essere un ragazzo modello, c'è ancora un padre idealista e galeotto da sfidare sotto canestro.

Short stories get a bad rap. You can't scroll through a GR review page without coming across mounds of complaints about how the reviewer "just isn't a short story person" or "can't connect with short stories" or "felt nothing about the stories."
