A more accurate name for this book would be "A Political History of Venice" seeing as that was the author's focus. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Pros: Quick and easy to read (I finished this in less than a day) Cons: Too brief to allow for much in the way of nuance, feels v biased but difficult to assess. A good starting point in any event.

I think that this book’s translation is very sloppy, and therefore it does not read fluidly in English. I found it hard to follow, and even harder to keep up with the pace of the book - when they say brief, they really do mean brief. I got this book while visiting Venice. Definitely a very brief history. The book dives more into specific political figures instead of the bigger ideas and influences I was hoping for. The book was a quick read and offered a few useful bits of information.
