«In principio era il Verbo», dice il Vangelo di Giovanni. Questa frase – e le parole di tutti e quattro i vangeli – è al centro degli insegnamenti della Chiesa cristiana e ha plasmato l’arte, la letteratura, il linguaggio e la mente stessa dell’Occidente.
Ma in realtà negli anni successivi alla morte di Cristo non c’era un solo Verbo, né un particolare consenso su chi fosse davvero Gesù o perché fosse così importante. C’erano, anzi, molti Gesù diversi, tra cui un Gesù aggressivo che disprezzava i suoi genitori e storpiava coloro che gli si opponevano, uno che vendette il suo gemello in schiavitù e uno che fece crocifiggere un altro al posto suo.
E oltre a Gesù c’erano molti altri Salvatori, molti altri figli di dèi che guarivano i malati e curavano miracolosamente gli storpi, in un intrecciarsi di tradizioni religiose i cui confini erano tutt’altro che chiari. A lot of the information in here has been available for a while, but it hasn’t been assimilated and discussed quite so thoroughly and well as here. It’s a non-judgmental discussion, but one can’t help but draw conclusions about how religion and myth develop and how the two are intertwined.

This one will set those unquestioning Christian minds spinning. Most of Nixey’s book was not new to me having read many of Bart Ehrman’s books but for anyone that has not yet read anything about the early Christianities it should be a very interesting book.

As a christian, I found this really interesting. This is all about the different versions of Jesus that have existed throughout history. It's well researched and well written.
