Sinossi
Nel corso dei primi anni di vita del Detection Club di Londra, i soci pubblicarono alcuni gialli scritti a più mani. "Chi è il colpevole?" ("Ask a Policeman", 1933) è uno di questi. John Rhode, su invito del collega Milward Kennedy, compose un lungo prologo nel quale viene raccontato l'omicidio di Lord Comstock, potente e detestato magnate della carta stampata. Il delitto è stato commesso nello studio della sua dimora di campagna mentre il segretario era impegnato nell'ufficio accanto e alcuni importanti personaggi si trovavano in un paio di salottini della villa in attesa di essere ricevuti. Scotland Yard, non riuscendo a venire a capo dell'enigma, chiede aiuto ad alcuni celebri investigatori dilettanti. A questo punto Rhode passa la mano e il ruolo di autore viene di volta in volta assunto dagli altri scrittori che cercano di risolvere il caso mettendo in campo i detective da loro creati. La mirabile trovata è che ciascuno prende a prestito il personaggio e lo stile narrativo dell'altro: così, per esempio, l'indagine di Roger Sheringham, inventato da Anthony Berkeley, viene raccontata dalla penna di Dorothy Sayers, la creatrice di Lord Peter Wimsey, e viceversa.

Originally published in 1933 this crime novel is put together by famous writers of the day. To add to the fun the crime writers write about each others detectives instead of their own! I think the books and stories the Detection Club did together must have been a lot of fun to do and to share around with other writers, but they come off less well for someone outside that context, and particularly given that many of the authors and detectives are no longer well-known.
