Sinossi

This edition is masterful. There are 13 pages of notes at the end in which the editors explain references in the text. In outline, the narrative follows Glatstein's trip from NYC to Poland to see his dying mother. Within this narrative, we are treated to surreal dreams and visions. On the voyage to

This memoir, thinly veiled as fiction, consists mostly of a series of encounters with people the author meets on his way to back to Poland and while there in order to visit his dying mother. Reveries and conversations blend together in a modern narrative style, plot almost disappearing in the midst
I was gifted this book as an introduction to great Yiddish literature. I enjoyed book 1, but I ~loved~ book 2, which reads with hindsight like the most beautiful and tragic resurrection of Jewish life in Poland that was just completely exterminated in the 40s. I love how Glatstein takes his reader t Leggi tutto
An exceptional glimpse into early 20th century Jewish life from a writer who knew the old and new worlds.
Two autobiographical novels of the author’s trip home to Poland to visit his dying mother. The first documents the trip from New York to Poland and the second takes place in a Jewish sanitarium, prior to the author’s return home. Written in the mid 1930s, the rise of Hitler and antisemitism in Europe Leggi tutto
