Sinossi
"L'importanza di chiamarsi Ernest", messa in scena per la prima volta a Londra il 14 febbraio 1895, è una delle commedie più rappresentate al mondo. Jack, il protagonista, per sfuggire alla noia della vita campagnola, si rifugia nella mondanità londinese con il falso nome di Ernest. Andato in visita a casa di Algernon, un suo compagno di scorribande, gli rivela di essersi innamorato di sua cugina Gwendolen, che pare corrispondere i suoi sentimenti. A seguito dell'opposizione della madre di lei, Augusta, Jack torna in campagna, dove viveva insieme alla sua protetta, la diciottenne Cecily, per scoprire che Algernon, anticipatolo, è riuscito a sedurre Cecily presentandosi sotto le mentite spoglie del fratello immaginario di Jack, Ernest. Quando viene raggiunto da Gwendolen, fuggita di casa per coronare il suo sogno d'amore, la verità sulla reale identità dei due viene a galla e le due ragazze, divenute amiche, decidono di vendicarsi. La commedia seguita fino al colpo di scena finale, grazie al quale tutti, compresa Augusta, potranno dirsi soddisfatti.
