È con una penna graffiante e provocatoria che Ljudmila Petrusevskaja restituisce innanzitutto a sé stessa la memoria di un'infanzia sovietica a cavallo della seconda guerra mondiale. Il filo dei ricordi si snoda in un quadro familiare ricco e stravagante, dove emergono l'affetto bruciante per il bisnonno Tato, tra i primi ad aderire alla causa bolscevica, le vibrazioni nostalgiche per una madre assente e l'ammirazione per nonno Kolja, il celebre linguista che tenne testa a Stalin. La piccola Ljudmila figura tra i tanti sfollati che nel gelo del 1941 lasciano Mosca per Kujbygev, al riparo dalla linea del fronte. Con la nonna e la zia, la vita nella cittadina è segnata dagli stenti: cibo e cherosene sono razionati, il calore di un cappotto è un sogno. In più, su una famiglia come la loro, di "nemici del popolo", pende anche la viltà dell'emarginazione sociale. A tutto questo, però, la piccola Ljudmila risponde con un disinvolto susseguirsi di avventure e ribellioni quotidiane che anticipano una vita di anticonformismo. Qualcos'altro, inoltre, tiene in piedi il suo mondo interiore: è lo smisurato amore per la lettura e per i grandi nomi della tradizione russa, nel cui solco i critici contemporanei inseriranno anche la scrittura di Ljudmila adulta, oggi acclamata autrice, donna di audacia e libertà singolari.

This could have been a great book, but I found it went all over the place and did not flow smoothly. Don't know if this is an effect of the translation or if it is the author's style of writing. But the events and Russian history portrayed in this little memoir were fascinating. I would love to see
