Scritte durante gli ultimi anni di vita, le «Lettere morali a Lucilio» costituiscono la più geniale opera di Seneca sotto il profilo del pensiero filosofico e la più significativa della sua personalità. Seguace del pensiero stoico, senza però assumerne le posizioni estreme, il grande erudito latino raccomanda in queste epistole la supremazia della ragione e il sacrificio dell'individuo a vantaggio della collettività, rivelandosi psicologo sensibile e raffinato, che conosce l'arte della persuasione e si rende conto di come il dialogo sia la forma letteraria più consona per raggiungere il perfezionamento morale.
