In questo dialogo Platone affronta due temi: l'origine del mondo e la natura dell'anima umana. La realtà (o l'illusione) nella quale viviamo altro non è che il riflesso di un mondo superiore, in cui regna il puro essere, non soggetto a mutamenti o variazioni. Il nostro, invece, è dominato dal divenire ed è opera di un "demiurgo" che cercò di ripetere come meglio poteva la visione che aveva avuto di quella perfezione. Di qui tutte le contraddizioni che il filosofo deve superare per giungere alla contemplazione del Vero e del Bello. E poi le diverse inclinazioni, le contrastanti passioni cui può cedere l'anima umana, la leggenda di Atlantide, la negazione dell'invidia degli dèi per la fortuna umana, la musica e la ginnastica come medicina dell'anima.
