Il 14 gennaio 2015 Tommy Caldwell, insieme al compagno Kevin Jorgeson, ha salito in diciannove giorni quella che è considerate la via più difficile in tutta la storia dello Yosemite: la Dawn Wall, una parete quasi verticale di quasi 1000 metri. Una scelta rischiosa dal punto di vista sportivo e non solo: poco più che ventenne, infatti, mentre si trova nelle montagne del Kirghizistan viene rapito da una banda di terroristi e si salva per miracolo; non molto tempo dopo perde l’indice sinistro in un incidente e, successivamente, viene lasciato dalla moglie e dal suo abituale compagno di cordata. Ma Caldwell supera queste avversità con rinnovata determinazione. Il suo obiettivo diventa la più grande, ripida, liscia parete di El Capitan: la Dawn Wall. Per ben sette anni Caldwell ci prova senza arrendersi: sette anni in cui ridefinisce i limiti di uno sport, ritrova l’amore e ha un figlio. Sette anni per arrivare a un successo straordinario.
