Scritto nel 1848, il romanzo La signora delle camelie creò subito un mito, entrato nell’immaginario di intere generazioni e diventato protagonista delle scene, sia del teatro di prosa che del teatro d’opera, nonché degli schermi del cinema. Lo stesso Dumas ne realizzò una versione teatrale, affidandola a Sarah Bernhardt. Pochi anni dopo, Giuseppe Verdi saprà farne una trasposizione sublime, in musica, con La Traviata. Margherita Gautier, alias Violetta, è diventata così una figura a sé stante: un mito con il quale si sono confrontate dive come Eleonora Duse, Greta Garbo, Maria Callas.
