Attraverso una rassegna di testi pedagogici degli ultimi due secoli, Alice Miller illustra i raffinati metodi di persuasione occulta messi in opera nella nostra civiltà per piegare l’impetuosità e la caparbietà del bambino e indurlo a identificarsi con il progetto educativo dei genitori. Il bambino, costretto a reprimere la propria aggressività, non saprà da adulto reagire alle ingiustizie sociali e potrà accettare senza opporsi le imposizioni di sistemi totalitari: esempio estremo è il nazismo, con la caratteristica divaricazione tra la protervia dei capi e l’acquiescenza del popolo tedesco. Tratto comune a coloro che hanno subìto un’educazione repressiva è la necessità di riempire con esperienze abnormi il vuoto lasciato dalla rimozione emotiva e dalla perdita dell’identità. La Miller rievoca qui le vicende di tre personaggi a diverso titolo esemplari: Adolf Hitler; il criminale degli anni sessanta Jürgen Bartsch, assassino e seviziatore di bambini; Christiane F., autrice del libro Noi, i ragazzi dello zoo di Berlino, in cui racconta la propria esperienza dell’emarginazione e della droga. In definitiva, l’educazione costituisce sempre – per la Miller – un mascheramento di reali rapporti di potere e di bisogni propri dei genitori; l’unica possibilità per il bambino di crescere senza traumi e di sviluppare le proprie potenzialità creative rimane legata a un comportamento empatico e «rispettoso» dei genitori nei suoi confronti.

On recommendation from my therapist. Luckily for me, this copy was heavily marked up so it was easy to skip around to the juicy bits. Quote: "A child conditioned to be well-behaved must not notice what she is feeling, but asks herself what she ought to feel."
In my opinion the best of Alice Miller's writing, it provides a well researched analysis of child rearing manuals over the centuries and their impact on our attitudes and behaviour towards children.
