Per giustificare i frequenti viaggi intercontinentali Amaryllis apre un import-export di arte indigena e inizia a fingere di essere una mercante d’armi che finge di essere una mercante d’arte. Recluta risorse, si infiltra in una estesa rete di trafficanti. Funziona. Il passo successivo è il trasferimento a Shanghai. Le si spalanca davanti, come un buco nero, una vita immersa nella menzogna: anni di continui inganni, senza mai tregua. Accetta di sposare un collega, vive con lui in una casa infestata di spie cinesi. Poco dopo nasce Zoë. Dove finisce la realtà e dove inizia la finzione, nella nuova esistenza che Amaryllis ha scelto di vivere?
Determinata a fermare i trafficanti di odio, distruzione e morte, trascorrerà molti anni sotto copertura arrivando quasi ad annientare se stessa. E proprio allora imparerà la lezione più importante: l’unico modo per sconfiggere il nemico è avere il coraggio di sedersi di fronte a lui e ascoltarlo.

More than likely this memoir will be a nonfiction bestseller in 2020. As a former CIA super spy, Fox has stellar media connections and it certainly won’t hurt that she is married to a member of the Kennedy family. It's a bit thin for a memoir. Already a short book, it is heavily padded with stories from her childhood. There's not enough from her time at the CIA. 4.5/5 I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. Usually, with 'memoirs' surrounding war and violence, I find that I lose interest quickly either out of repetitiveness or because the events are tough to swallow. Rousing, thought-provoking story of a young lady's ten-year tenure at the CIA working undercover, often overseas in trouble spots. I liked reading about her processes and methods. I also admire her dedication and tenacity. The pace doesn't lag. I don't remember reading any long gross scenes.
Wer hier spannende Agentengeschichten erwartet, wird das Buch sicher enttäuscht beiseite legen.
