Sinossi
Nel piccolo e fatiscente negozio di un rigattiere di Chicago, un cliente si imbatte in un vecchio nichelino (l'American Buffalo) e lo compra per soli 90 dollari. Quando il proprietario del posto, Don, viene a conoscenza del valore reale di quella monetina si sente defraudato ingiustamente e decide di averla indietro a tutti i costi, rubandola. A tale scopo coinvolge nel suo progetto il giovane amico Bobby e Teach, uno spaccone paranoico e violento. I tre cospiratori portano avanti il piano criminale come se si trattasse di una normale transazione d'affari. Quando invece il piano fallisce e la frustrazione che ne deriva è insopportabile, Don, Bobby e Teach si trasformano in individui senza scrupoli che non esitano a scagliarsi l'uno contro l'altro senza esclusione di colpi.
