L’ispettore Erlendur è tornato nei luoghi della sua infanzia. Trascorrerà qualche tempo nel piccolo villaggio sulle rive di un fiordo dell’Islanda orientale, deciso ad affrontare una volta per tutte l’ossessione che lo perseguita fin da quando era bambino: la scomparsa del fratello minore Bergur durante una bufera di neve. Di notte, solo nel rudere abbandonato della sua casa, attende che l’oscurità, il gelo e il vento gli riportino i fantasmi della tragica esperienza che distrusse per sempre la sua famiglia; di giorno, vaga per i boschi e la brughiera alla disperata ricerca di indizi. E proprio qui si imbatte per caso in una vicenda per molti versi simile a quella di Bergur: la sparizione di una giovane donna, in una notte di tormenta, nel gennaio del 1942. Una storia non ancora dimenticata, ma che molti preferirebbero lasciare sepolta sotto decenni di segreti e sensi di colpa. Immerso in un paesaggio aspro, in cui una modernità disordinata e invadente si scontra con una natura ancora capace di sconvolgere, Erlendur si lascia trasportare in un’indagine al confine tra realtà e allucinazione, travolto da un’insaziabile sete di risposte che lo costringerà a scavare ostinatamente dentro ferite mai curate, a riportare in luce antiche suggestioni, a riesumare tormenti inconfessabili.

4.5 stars, rounded up. I love this author, his characters, especially Erlendur, and this book. Indridason is one of a core group of Scandinavian crime writers whose work I feel is genuinely outstanding. I'm not overly fond of a lot of newer Scandinavian crime authors who seem to want to mix romance
