«Il mio amico Serge ha comprato un quadro» annuncia Marc, da solo in scena, ad apertura di sipario. «È una tela di circa un metro e sessanta per un metro e venti, dipinta di bianco. Il fondo è bianco, e strizzando gli occhi si possono intravedere delle sottili filettature diagonali, bianche». Subito dopo Marc viene a sapere dallo stesso Serge che il quadro bianco a righe bianche è stato pagato duecentomila franchi: cosa che Marc giudica grottesca, poiché secondo lui è «una merda». Un terzo amico, Yvan - che ha già abbastanza guai con i preparativi del suo matrimonio -, non prende posizione, venendo accusato dagli altri due di pusillanimità e doppiezza. Così, la serata che i tre decidono di trascorrere insieme si trasforma in un regolamento di conti, in un gioco al massacro: il quadro bianco a righe bianche diventa il rivelatore da cui affiorano a poco a poco nevrosi, risentimenti e rivalità, mentre le parole si fanno sempre più velenose, sempre più acuminate, fino a ridurre in macerie la fragile impalcatura di un rapporto fondato sull'egoismo, la vanità e l'ipocrisia. Yasmina Reza, di cui conosciamo la penna affilata e lo sguardo chirurgico, tocca in questa commedia nera vette di comica crudeltà, si diverte e ci fa divertire - perché ridiamo molto, anche se sempre più a denti stretti, a mano a mano che da sotto la maschera buffa del théâtre de boulevard vediamo spuntare la malinconia.

Interesting, quick sharp and witty! I really enjoyed this play and wouldn't hesitate to see this performed on stage.
This only takes about an hour or so to read, and it is great fun. There are only three characters, Marc, Serge, and Yvan, and they spend the entire time bickering like an old married couple. To the characters, every word has a multitude of subtexts, hides a variety of insults and slights, expresses
