La storia della coppia fantastica a cui già si allude in altre opere di Tolkien è il cuore di questo inedito molto atteso dagli appassionati, che la racconta per esteso: quello tra Beren e Lúthien è un amore contrastato, tra un umano della Terra di Mezzo e un'elfa di stirpe regale. Lui mortale, lei immortale, divisi dalla razza, uniti dalla passione e dalla tenacia: il padre di Lúthien si rifiutò di concedere a Beren la mano della figlia, ma ben sapeva di non poter contrastare per sempre i due innamorati. Così sfidò l'umano a portargli uno dei Silmaril della Corona di Morgoth, promettendogli in cambio la sua benedizione. Una missione impossibile che invece riuscì. Beren, ferito a morte, fu poi salvato in extremis, e Lúthien rinunciò all'immortalità per essere sua pari. In questo volume Christopher Tolkien ha cercato di estrapolare la storia di Beren e Lúthien dal contesto più ampio in cui era contenuta; ma il racconto ha subito cambiamenti e si è evoluto man mano che l'orizzonte della Terra di Mezzo si è allargato. Per mostrare la vitalità di questo nucleo narrativo il curatore ha scelto di raccontarla attraverso le parole di suo padre prima nella sua forma originale e poi in passaggi di prosa e di poesia appartenenti a testi posteriori: qui insieme per la prima volta, tutti contribuiscono a rivelarne l'immediatezza.
