Martha è per tutti «la bambina della valigia». Da Parigi, è arrivata a Liverpool tutta sola, senza una madre e un padre a tenerla per mano e in una culla un po' speciale: una calda e morbida valigia. Da allora, non ha più lasciato l’affollata stazione e ne ha fatto il suo regno personale. Qui raccoglie tutti i libri che i viaggiatori distratti si dimenticano o abbandonano di proposito. Così, Martha li custodisce gelosamente in una biblioteca fornitissima, a cui solo lei ha accesso, e con loro stabilisce un dialogo silenzioso nella speranza di scoprire qualcosa di più sui legittimi proprietari. Nella speranza di trovare tra quelle pagine piccole tracce che la conducano ai suoi genitori. È convinta che prima o poi riuscirà a riabbracciarli. Deve solo avere fiducia e continuare a cercare. Fino a quando, all'improvviso, la sua ostinazione comincia a portarla sulla strada giusta. Giorno dopo giorno, inizia a ricevere strane lettere senza mittente e brevi messaggi scarabocchiati su fogli di fortuna: tanti piccoli indizi che le parlano di un passato a lei sconosciuto. Un passato in cui c’è una persona che sembra volerle molto bene e conoscere cose di lei che nessun altro potrebbe sapere. Per la prima volta Martha sente di essere a un passo dal realizzare il suo sogno e questa volta non ha intenzione di lasciarselo sfuggire. Perché è pronta a tutto pur di scoprire il suo posto nel mondo. Anche a risolvere un mistero su alcuni oggetti appartenuti ai leggendari Beatles, che potrebbero finalmente aiutarla a tornare a casa.
Caroline Wallace firma un esordio fresco e brillante, che ha subito incontrato il favore di lettori e librai e si è imposto come uno dei romanzi più originali scritti negli ultimi anni. Quella di Martha è una storia che chiede di essere custodita con cura. Ci invita a credere nel potere della speranza e della meraviglia che circonda ogni cosa, anche gli oggetti più insignificanti. Perché ne basta un pizzico per cambiare un’esistenza intera.
