Le «grandi speranze» che danno il titolo al romanzo sono quelle che coltiva Philip Pirrip, detto Pip, un orfano di umili origini, e che illuminano il suo cammino dall’infanzia all’età adulta. Ad alimentarle è un misterioso benefattore che gli ha destinato una cospicua fortuna consentendogli di abbandonare il povero villaggio del Kent e il mestiere di fabbro per trasferirsi a Londra e ricevere l’educazione di un gentleman. Pip crede si tratti di Miss Havisham, una ricca ed eccentrica signora di mezza età di cui ha frequentato la casa invaghendosi della sua protetta, l’orgogliosa e sfuggente Estella. Quando scopre la vera identità dell’artefice del suo destino Pip comprende di essere stato vittima di un clamoroso equivoco: alla trepidazione dell’attesa subentra il tragico disincanto di aver visto svanire uno dopo l’altro i propri sogni. Pubblicato nel 1861, il capolavoro di Dickens è la storia di un’illusione destinata a segnare irreparabilmente l’esistenza del protagonista, ma anche del riscatto di chi, dopo sofferenze e delusioni, saprà trovare in sé la forza di riscoprire valori come l’amicizia e l’amore che aveva sacrificato all’ambizione e al successo.

Boring, dull, lifeless, and flat. This is so drawn out and boring I kept having to remind myself what the plot was. Best to get someone else to sum up the story rather than undergo the torture of reading it.
