Nella distopica città di Ronin, il Metax comincia a scarseggiare. L'ingegnere capo, responsabile della ricerca e dell'estrazione del prezioso materiale, essenziale per la sopravvivenza del regno, è alle strette, pressato dai tirapiedi del Re: solo dal suo successo nel trovare altro Metax dipende la salvezza e la prosperità della città di Ronin. Come se non bastasse, una strana malattia colpisce la popolazione e un gruppo di ecoterroristi minaccia l'ordine stabilito, rallentando gli scavi con sabotaggi e attentati ma anche mostrando che, forse, un'altra via esiste. Che la soluzione all'esaurirsi del Metax non è cercare altro Metax, né scavare più a fondo, ma immaginare un'esistenza nuova. In questo racconto tra fantascienza e fantasy, tra thriller politico e critica ecologica, Antoine Cossé sublima il suo stile cinematografico in poesia visiva. La metafora sullo sfruttamento delle risorse naturali si accompagna alla riflessione sulla resistenza, il futuro è incarnato da una cellula clandestina di bambini antisistema e lo svelamento finale non è una risoluzione ma una danza, una canzone, un colore. Really disappointing. A wafer thin story padded out with many pages of dialogue-free images showing objects (birds and cars mostly) in transit from one location to another. Could easily be read through in less than an hour.
This art style is speaking to me.
This was probably way too conceptual for me to actually enjoy it. The art is pretty unique, with lots of dark watercolors. i'm just a beginner in a world of comics, so i enjoyed the style and cinematic feeling while letting myself to ignore the pretending-to-be-mysterious fabula. 3.5/5 and why not? :)
What an odd read. Atmospheric and expansive, Metax was very much about delivering a tone more than anything else: a rare kind of book these days. I liked the bits of story that were there. Wig was an especially chilling character.
5 stars for the stellar art - minimalistic but vibrant with an excellent grasp of depicting movement and creating a (sombre) atmosphere. The characters are a quite. hard to distinguish due to the minimalistic style though, and the plot remains a bit vague
One of the most beautiful comics I’ve read in recent memory. I’ve been a fan of Antoine Cossé’s art from what little pieces I’ve seen but never had a chance to read a full story before this.
