Arriva per la prima volta in libreria con "Il funzionario nudo" (1968), un memoir senza filtri, commovente e arguto, in cui l'autore si espone con la stessa assoluta sfrontatezza con cui passeggiava per le strade di Londra, nei locali notturni o posando nudo per le lezioni di pittura dal vivo. Se la vita è «una cosa divertente che capita sulla via che porta alla tomba», Crisp ha saputo trasformarla in un manifesto leggendario. Icona culturale sia in Gran Bretagna sia negli Stati Uniti, nel 1993 è stato scelto da Channel 4 per tenere un discorso alla nazione in contemporanea a quello di fine anno della Regina Elisabetta, e proprio a lui è dedicata la celebre canzone di Sting "Englishman in New York", in cui il cantante lo definisce «l'uomo più coraggioso che abbia mai incontrato». Da questo romanzo, finalmente disponibile per il pubblico italiano con la prefazione di Michele Masneri e la traduzione di Sara Reggiani, nel 1975 è stato tratto l'omonimo film televisivo della BBC.
