Dopo "Infanzia" e "Gioventù", ecco il terzo capitolo della trilogia di Copenaghen di Tove Ditlevsen, che chiude la sua opera autobiografica. Tove ha soltanto vent'anni, ma è già una poetessa conosciuta, sta scrivendo il suo primo romanzo ed è la moglie di un editore molto più grande di lei. Il suo cammino nella vita sembra indirizzato verso la felicità, eppure qualcosa scricchiola: a pensarci bene, suo marito non l'ha mai presa tra le braccia; la notte dorme sul divano perché lui non è disposto a condividere il letto e a colazione non può rivolgergli la parola mentre lui legge il giornale. La prima esperienza matrimoniale non è certo idilliaca, ma la giovane non ha idea delle battaglie che ancora l'aspettano: relazioni amorose tormentate, fallimenti artistici, gravidanze indesiderate. Soprattutto, però, l'uomo davvero sbagliato non ha ancora incrociato la sua strada. Dal momento in cui lo farà, niente sarà più come prima: mano nella mano, quest'individuo subdolo la trascinerà in un baratro profondo, dal quale sarà molto difficile riemergere. Con il passare degli anni, la tensione centrale della vita di Tove viene dolorosamente messa a fuoco: il terribile richiamo della dipendenza, in tutte le sue forme. Considerato il capolavoro dell'autrice, "Dipendenza" completa il bruciante ritratto del viaggio di una donna attraverso l'amore, l'amicizia, l'ambizione.
