Normandia, 1067. Guglielmo di Normandia torna in patria trionfante dopo aver sconfitto il re sassone Aroldo II nella sanguinosa battaglia di Hastings. Costretto a portare con sé un gruppo di nobili inglesi, il nuovo sovrano sa che non può fidarsi degli uomini che lo circondano, pronti a tradirlo o a insorgere contro di lui. Tra questi vi è il giovane Waltheof, conte di Northumbria che, messi da parte i propri rancori verso Guglielmo, s’innamora di Giuditta, la giovane nipote del re, e riesce, con non poche difficoltà, a sposarla. Il loro matrimonio, però, è quanto mai burrascoso. Sospetto e diffidenza aleggiano tra i due sposi, e la situazione precipita quando Waltheof, accusato di alto tradimento, viene giustiziato. A occuparsi delle contee lasciate senza guida viene chiamato Simone di Senlis, il suo fedele scudiero, di cui Matilde, figlia maggiore di Waltheof e Giuditta, si innamora. Simone e Matilde si amano appassionatamente, ma ancora una volta i problemi non mancano. Giuditta, per rancori personali verso Simone, ostacola l’unione tra i due giovani che, per coronare il loro sogno d’amore, sono costretti a sposarsi di nascosto. Ma il loro idillio, purtroppo, non dura a lungo: Simone deve partire per la crociata e quella campagna in Terra Santa rischia di essergli fatale…
