Simon Watson fa il bibliotecario in un minuscolo paesino di Long Island. Ogni giorno, la sua unica compagnia sono il canto rabbioso dell’oceano e i suoi amati libri antichi. Dentro c’è un libro, un libro molto vecchio, con le pagine rovinate dall’acqua. Glielo manda un genealogista sconosciuto che, facendo ricerche, si è imbattuto in questo manoscritto risalente al XIX secolo. L’uomo è convinto che all’interno siano nascoste delle verità che riguardano la famiglia di Simon. Il bibliotecario comincia a leggerlo, e si trova immerso nella storia di Adam ed Evangeline, due ragazzi che si sono amati di un amore impossibile due secoli prima. Adam era un ragazzo enigmatico e di poche parole. Evangeline, pelle diafana e lunghi capelli neri, aveva la capacità di stare sott’acqua più di chiunque altro. Proprio come la madre di Simon. Pagina dopo pagina, Simon scopre anche una verità terribile: il 24 luglio è un giorno maledetto per tutte le donne della sua famiglia. E il prezzo da pagare è la vita. Sua sorella Enola sta per tornare a casa proprio mentre il fatidico giorno si avvicina. Solo tra le pagine di quell’antico manoscritto Simon potrà trovare, forse, il modo per salvarla…

Wow.... Wow... Wow... This book was simply amazing. I'm not usually drawn to books of this nature but I thrive on how the author uses one book, a book that began with one man who ran a carnival with 3 people in it that change the course of the characters lives. Swyler braids these families together
