Il libro comincia sotto segni sinistri per i Greci. I Persiani occupano Atene abbandonata e deserta: vi è rimasto soltanto un piccolo gruppo di Ateniesi, che barricano l'Acropoli con travi. Quando i Persiani vi salgono, i Greci si gettano giù dalle mura o cercano rifugio nel megaron, dove vengono massacrati. L'Acropoli è incendiata. Poco tempo dopo, nelle acque di Salamina, avviene la battaglia decisiva, davanti agli occhi di Serse. La flotta greca sconfigge la flotta persiana, mentre una parte dell'esercito persiano torna in patria, torturata dalla fame e dalle pestilenze. Tra i protagonisti greci e persiani, uno primeggia fra tutti: Temistocle, il nuovo Ulisse, geniale, audace, avido, corrotto, senza scrupoli.

This was really my introduction into the world of classical Greek and I was pleasantly surprised. The Greek presented by Herodotus is much more difficult than the Greek New Testament, but has pushed me to study the Greek language far more than the New Testament did.
