Il traffico di Lagos scorre lento come sabbia in una clessidra e il caldo non fa che aumentare il senso di disagio. Nel caos di auto ferme incolonnate c’è quella dello psicologo forense Philip Taiwo, destinazione Grace Church. Il consiglio degli Anziani della chiesa vuole affidargli un incarico molto delicato: Folasade Dawodu, la moglie del vescovo Jeremiah Dawodu, meglio nota come la «First Lady», è scomparsa. Ma non è su di lei che a Taiwo viene chiesto di investigare. Il vescovo è accusato di averla uccisa e l’arresto è avvenuto nel modo più spettacolare e umiliante possibile: in diretta televisiva, mentre dal pulpito declamava i suoi sermoni.
Uomo molto potente e carismatico, Dawodu si professa innocente e del tutto estraneo alle accuse, mentre la comunità si stringe attorno a lui e minimizza la scomparsa della moglie. Non è la prima volta, infatti, che Folasade si allontana da casa per ritrovare un po’ di serenità. Tutti sono convinti che tornerà presto dal marito e che qualcuno voglia incastrare Dawodu. Spetta quindi a Taiwo il compito di scagionare il pastore, ma lo psicologo si renderà conto ben presto di aver soltanto iniziato a scavare tra gli inquietanti segreti che gettano un’ombra sulla congregazione religiosa nigeriana.
