Nella prefazione alla prima edizione di "Kinder-und Hausmdrchen" i fratelli Grimm definiscono i loro testi "innocenti fiabe per la casa". Difficile crederci vista la truculenza che spesso trabocca da questa raccolta: vendette, malefici, avvelenamenti, poteri occulti, boschi fitti in cui sembra impossibile ritrovare il sentiero perso, atmosfere oscure e tenebrose. Eppure, in queste fiabe riunite e riviste dai due filologi tedeschi, la purezza e l'innocenza infantili sono sempre presenti in quel magico mondo popolato da streghe, gnomi, draghi, fate e diavoli, e si intrecciano con naturalezza agli episodi sinistri. La grande forza liberatoria delle fiabe dei Grimm sta nell'immancabile e crudelissima punizione del "cattivo" e nella rivalsa dei deboli sugli oppressori: una giustizia rigida che non lascia sfumature tra bene e male e che ben rappresenta l'immaginario dissacrante dei Grimm. "Biancaneve", "Cappuccetto rosso", "Pollicino", "Hansel e Gretel", "Cenerentola": sono solo alcune delle "fiabe popolari" elevate dai Grimm a classici della letteratura.
