Based on lectures, the chapters are each one speech. Since written by an academic, the book would have actually been easier to read and understand if the endnotes were instead footnotes. I read this book after having just finished The World of Late Antiquity: AD 150-75o also by Peter R.L. Brown . T
Picked up this short book off the shelf, because I am interested in the topic (currently reading City of God and Brown's biography of Augustine).
