Senza un soldo a Parigi e a Londra (1933) è il romanzo d’esordio di George Orwell, che contamina naturalismo e satira, elementi tipici di tutta una produzione letteraria meno mitizzata ma altrettanto fondamentale di quella delle utopie negative. Il protagonista è un giovane inglese che vive con entusiasmo la Parigi maleducata ed effervescente dei quartieri popolari ma, per una serie di contrattempi, si ritrova a fare letteralmente la fame. Così, determinato a uscire da quell’inferno, torna a Londra, in patria, solamente per scoprire che lo attende un altro inferno, seppure completamente diverso.
