È l’ultimo libro di Bataille, cui egli lavorò dal 1959 al 1961 (morirà l’anno dopo). Negli intenti dell’autore doveva essere un libro superiore a tutti quelli da lui pubblicati, una sorta di ricapitolazione dei temi sui quali si erano esercitati il suo pensiero e la sua arte: l’amore, la morte, il sacro, il lavoro, l’utile, il gioco, la guerra ecc. Sembra che l’opera rientri in un progetto di «storia universale» lungamente accarezzato e rimasto irrealizzato. Della storia universale il testo, peraltro molto breve, ha la struttura; più precisamente si tratta di una lettura riccamente illustrata della storia universale attraverso le rappresentazioni dell’erotismo tragico. Una prima parte è dedicata alla nascita di Eros nella preistoria, associata alla coscienza della morte. Una seconda parte tratta delle rappresentazioni dell’erotismo dall’antichità ai nostri giorni: dall’erotismo dionisiaco, senza misura, all’erotismo cosciente quale si manifesta nel manierismo e nel surrealismo. Concludono il libro due capitoletti «fotografici», l’uno sul sacrificio "vaudou", l’altro sul supplizio cinese dei «cento pezzi», che servono a Bataille per dimostrare la tesi dell’identità dei contrari che regge l’intera esposizione: dal cacciatore preistorico che gode agonizzando accanto alla sua preda a tutte le varianti del sadismo.

I absolutely bought this book because the cover matches my favourite blue nail-polish exactly . really, I didn't understand a word he was saying but I looked impossibly chic while reading it.
This is my second read on George Bataille's essays on Eroticism & Humanity.
