La guerra. È la guerra per Neil Gaiman la causa della terribile carestia che spinge i genitori di Hansel e Gretel ad abbandonarli a un incerto destino pur di salvare, così dice la moglie del taglialegna, il resto della famiglia. Come nel racconto della tradizione è Hansel - che qui però è il più piccolo - a segnare la strada per il ritorno prima con i sassolini poi con le briciole. Con successo la prima volta, invano la seconda. Persi nel bosco, qui è il profumo del pane e non il fiabesco uccellino a guidarli verso la casa della vecchina. Una vera strega, anche se Gaiman mai così la chiama. Quasi cieca per non accorgersi che non è un dito ma un ossicino di pollo, famelicamente bramosa di carne, ambigua nel modo in cui tratta Gretel. In cambio della sua complicità le promette l'educazione che a una fanciulla s'addice. Ma nel forno - non si può tradire la legge del contrappasso - ancora una volta ci finirà la strega, vinta dall'acume della ragazzina. E i tesori della strega - cappelli, guanti, anelli, collane, gioielli - altro non sono che gli inquietanti resti dei precedenti, sfortunati ospiti della casetta. Faranno la fortuna del padre di Hansel e Gretel. La madre e la vecchia sono ormai polvere e ossa. Età di lettura: da 8 anni.

Honestly, not a huge fan of this one Gaiman did a splendid job when he retold Sleeping Beauty ( The Sleeper and the Spindle ) so I was excited at the idea of another classic being twisted by his mind. Neil Gaiman + Hansel and Gretel = great book! Gaiman has that rare talent of taking a known story and adding a new layer to it.
