L'orfano Jude Fawley, cresciuto nelle campagne della fittizia contea del Wessex, è costretto a lavorare al forno della zia, ma il suo amore per lo studio lo porta a sognare per il futuro una carriera in ambito ecclesiastico - chissà, un giorno potrebbe addirittura diventare vescovo. Ma quello che in un "normale" romanzo di formazione sarebbe l'inizio di una parabola ascendente, nelle mani di Thomas Hardy diventa il preludio di una storia che conduce il suo protagonista in una spirale di oscurità. Jude non sarà nulla di quello che si era prefigurato: si sposerà con la giovane provocatrice Arabella, per poi allontanarsene, si trasferirà in città, diventerà muratore, vivrà nello scandalo una lunga relazione con la cugina. Sarà sommerso da una serie di situazioni dolorose che metteranno a durissima prova il suo rapporto con la fede. Hardy scrive un romanzo di de-formazione che esplora con audacia la violenza del mondo verso quanti non nascono nel privilegio. Un'opera che, ponendo in discussione il rapporto fra classi sociali e attaccando alle fondamenta le istituzioni più care alla società vittoriana, suscitò scandalo fra i contemporanei, che la bollarono come oscena e immorale.

Finally read it! This one was so often interrupted and left for dead... & I guess it was better to keep straining the eyes and pausing after glorious upon glorious sentence for better understanding.
