San Francisco, sul finire degli anni Venti, non è certo un luogo tranquillo. Per questo il detective Sam Spade ha imparato che è meglio stare sempre sul chi vive. Anche quando nel suo ufficio sulla Baia si presenta un'incantevole ragazza bionda con un nome che è già un programma: Miss Wonderly. La giovane donna vuole che Spade la aiuti a scoprire che fine ha fatto sua sorella Corinne, che si è legata a un poco di buono, un certo Floyd Thursby. Ma presto Spade si accorgerà che la sua cliente non è l'angelica creatura che appare. È invece una dark lady spietata, ipocrita e manipolatrice, disposta a tutto pur di entrare in possesso di un antico e prezioso manufatto, una statua d'oro e di gemme raffigurante un falco, donata dai Cavalieri di Malta all'imperatore Carlo V nel XVI secolo. Pubblicato nel 1930, "Il falco maltese" è considerato il capolavoro di Hammett, il più bel romanzo del "duro" Spade, portato sul grande schermo da un indimenticabile Humphrey Bogart.
