Tra boschi stregati, pentacoli e quadrati magici, incontra molte celebrità della sua epoca, come il gesuita egittologo Athanasius Kircher, alla ricerca di un drago con il cui sangue vuole creare una medicina contro la peste, o il re di Svezia Gustavo Adolfo Vasa, circondato dai suoi rudi soldati sul campo di battaglia. Tyll sopravvive alla storia e ai potenti, e diventa testimone eccellente di un passato europeo denso di parallelismi con i nostri tempi, mostrandoci con la comicità disperata della rassegnazione l'immenso orrore e la grande bellezza di cui siamo capaci.
