Il viaggiò dell'eroe, cioè quel percorso quasi obbligato che consente all'uomo di superare prove e confronti col mondo esterno per conquistare una nuova consapevolezza di sé è valido anche per la donna? Con questo libro, nato in risposta all'"Eroe dai mille volti" di Joseph Campbell (in seguitò reinterpretato ad uso degli scrittori da Chris Vogler nel suo "Il viaggio dell'eroe"), la Murdock, psicologa di estrazione junghiana, propone la sua risposta. Ed è quella di un viaggio articolato in dieci tappe, non necessariamente consequenziali, ma disposte in un cerchio che simbolizza il divino femminile. L'inizio è segnato dalla separazione dal femminile, la Madre - cioè tutto ciò che l'eroina non vuol "diventare - che produce un'identificazione con il Padre, il maschile. È entrando nel mondo maschile e scontrandosi con le prove che incontra sul percorso che l'eroina capisce che è arrivato il momento di essere anziché di fare. Da qui inizia il viaggio di ritorno verso la parte femminile, la fase cioè in cui bisogna riprendere possesso e cura delle proprie parti rimosse. E solo accettando il proprio essere donna che si potrà raggiungere l'unione degli opposti e il proprio equilibrio fisico e mentale. Solo adesso il viaggio dell'eroina è una missione. Compiuta. Ora che è diventata una donna indipendente dalie influenze degli altri ma capace, in quanto essere completo, di unirsi all'altro.

Very insightful read about spiritual and feminist liberation. However, there was a chapter on the continuation on the stereotype that women of color being the bearers of the great mysteries and great healers of the world. This book was strongly recommended by several speakers at Geek Girl Con who were disappointed that Joseph Campbell’s worth on the monomyth excluded the female mythic adventure.
