Dublino, 16 giugno 1904, uno dei giorni più importanti sul calendario della letteratura mondiale. È la data scelta da James Joyce per immortalare in poco meno di ventiquattr'ore la vita di Leopold Bloom, di sua moglie Molly e di Stephen Dedalus, realizzando un'opera destinata a rivoluzionare il romanzo. È l'odissea quotidiana dell'uomo moderno, protagonista non di peregrinazioni mitiche e straordinarie, ma di una vita normale che però riserva - se osservata da vicino - non minori emozioni, colpi di scena, imprevisti e avventure del decennale viaggio dell'eroe omerico. "Leggere l'Ulisse", scrive Alessandro Ceni nella sua Nota introduttiva, "è come guardare da troppo vicino la trama di un tessuto" dove le parole, che sono i nodi della trama, rivoluzionano. Trascinata da una scrittura mutevole e mimetica, da un uso delle parole che è esso stesso narrazione, la complessa partitura del romanzo procede con un impeto che scuote e disorienta. Perché "un testo così concepito esige un lettore pronto a traslocarvisi armi e bagagli, ad abitarlo, a starci dentro abbandonando ogni incertezza". Solo immergendosi senza riserve nella scrittura il lettore potrà uscirne davvero, alla fine, inondato di tutta la luce che questo romanzo concentra in sé.

I Can't do it, It fell in my toilet and didn't dry well, and I'm accepting it as an act of god. I decided against burning it, and just threw it out. Yes, I am a horrible person.
