E raccontare solo alcuni aspetti della trama: Rosemary Cooke ha cinque anni quando, d’estate, viene spedita dai nonni. Al ritorno in famiglia scopre che sua sorella è sparita e dell’argomento non bisogna parlare. Cinque anni più tardi, suo fratello scappa di casa, e probabilmente è ricercato dall’FBI. È facile intuire che la vita di Rosemary sia segnata da queste due assenze. Ma quando devi raccontare una storia, le ha insegnato suo padre, comincia dal centro. Salta l’inizio. E al centro di questa storia c’è lei ventiduenne che si ritrova finalmente a fare i conti col proprio passato e coi propri ricordi. Tra l’altro, e lei lo sa benissimo, dei ricordi non ci si può fidare più di tanto... Avete fra le mani un romanzo sorprendente. Le vicende della famiglia Cooke (decisamente non convenzionale, lo avrete capito; e tre fratelli così non si sono mai visti, nella letteratura di tutti i paesi) si intrecciano, nel racconto di Rosemary, con le sue avventure di studentessa, in un turbinio di battute sferzanti e colpi di scena. Spesso si ride, e talvolta si piange: due delle espressioni più tipiche di quel particolare tipo di primate che è l’essere umano.

I could not relate to the characters and the choppy writing style! Wanted to like this book, and there were interesting elements, but I couldn't connect to the way the story was told. Forced myself to even skim the book. Am I the only person, it seems, who did not like it?

So if I was to give Karen Joy Fowler advice on how to write a great novel, I'd tell her to come with an engaging, intelligent and witty narrator and have her tell a captivating, moving and timely story and do it in a compelling and original way. This book got me out of my very long reading slump. It was such an easy book to read, yet it was wonderfully complex. I sank into it as I hadn’t sunk into a book for a long time. It felt wonderful. Further proof that the 2014 Man Booker Prize was an absolute farce. I was enjoying this novel until it went all Jane Goodall.
