Taichi è stato costretto a smettere di lavorare dieci anni fa e da allora lui e sua moglie Natsuko sopravvivono grazie allo stipendio part-time di quest'ultima. Natsuko, tuttavia, è una donna abituata alla sofferenza. Il fratello e la madre hanno dilapidato il patrimonio di famiglia approfittandosi di lei per anni, incapaci di accettare la loro nuova condizione sociale. Un giorno Natsuko legge l'annuncio di una spa e riconosce quello che un tempo era stato l'hotel di lusso dove il nonno aveva portato sua mamma da piccola. Nonostante i costi, decide di andarci con il marito infermo, ma il soggiorno innesca una serie di ricordi legati alla difficile storia della sua famiglia, pensieri dolorosi che rievocano alcuni fantasmi del passato ma che si rivelano infine liberatori e le permettono di riconciliarsi con Taichi. Ispirato al classico di Jun'ichiro Tanizaki "Neve sottile", "Novantanove baci" è il secondo racconto del libro che ritrae con uno stile toccante e poetico la vita di quattro sorelle che abitano nello shitamachi di Tokyo. La storia, narrata da Nanako, la minore delle sorelle, è intrisa di una delicata carica erotica e presenta una vivida descrizione delle persone che abitano nel loro quartiere: pure, nobili d'animo e orgogliose.

Touring the Land of the Dead — what a wonderful read! 🙂 🙃 4.5 stars for me. This won the Akutagawa Prize in 2012. Two novellas, both quite different. I generally love fiction translated from Japanese & the first novella (the title of the book), I really enjoyed. I’m not sure if it’s the Japanese culture or how the Japanese word translates into English, but I usually always find Japanese stories beautiful & thou Leggi tutto
