In una foresta antica e sperduta, in mezzo ad alberi maestosi, c'è una curiosa casetta in cui abitano tre robot: Giovanni Lawson, detto Gio, androide inventore; l'Infermiera Ratched, macchina per l'assistenza sanitaria dolcemente sadica; e Rambo, piccolo aspirapolvere ansioso. Insieme a loro il giovane Victor Lawson, unico essere umano della famiglia. La vita scorre tranquilla finché un giorno Vic trova e ripara un androide sconosciuto chiamato Hap, e scopre che lui e Gio condividono un oscuro passato. L'arrivo di Hap turba la serenità della famiglia, che fino a quel momento ha vissuto nascosta, svelandone la posizione agli agenti dell'Autorità a caccia di ribelli. Gio viene catturato e portato nella Città dei Sogni Elettrici, dove rischia di essere smantellato o, peggio, riprogrammato. E così, per salvarlo, Victor, Hap, Rambo e l'Infermiera Ratched si mettono in cammino attraverso un paese ignoto e ostile. Il viaggio sarà l'occasione per riflettere su ciò che distingue un cuore umano da un cuore meccanico, e Vic si troverà a compiere una scelta decisiva: sarà in grado di aprirsi all'amore, con tutto quello che comporta?
