Abilene Tucker dovrà trascorrere l'estate, sola, in una sperduta cittadina del Kansas, ospite di amici del padre. Allo smarrimento e alla noia iniziali subentra presto la curiosità per alcuni stravaganti personaggi del paese: una giornalista, una cartomante, una bizzarra suora, un singolare pastore battista. Il ritrovamento di alcune vecchie lettere e di una mappa misteriosa fanno il resto: giornate che si prospettavano monotone e insignificanti si riempiono di mistero ed eccitazione, grazie anche a due coetanee con le quali Abilene stringe una forte amicizia. Gli anni e il luogo in cui tutto questo avviene regalano ulteriore fascino alla narrazione: siamo nel 1936, nella cittadina è vivo il ricordo della Grande Depressione, del Proibizionismo, del Ku Klux Klan, e le polverose lettere ritrovate risalgono alla Prima guerra mondiale. A nice safe choice for the Newbery people, but not one that knocked my socks off. The best historical novels, of course, trick you into learning about their periods. All through reading this book I thought I would give it 3 stars but after finishing I am moving my score up to 3.5 because the ending of the story dominated the whole story and made everything else worthwhile. I'm not a fan of the ingenuous, folksy narrator. I'm not particularly enamored of the rural Depression setting, as it's been done so many times as to be stale.
