La guerra sul fronte orientale, iniziata il 22 giugno 1941 con l'invasione da parte delle forze armate tedesche nel territori dell'Unione Sovietica e conclusasi al primi di maggio del 1945 con la fine della battaglia per la conquista di Berlino, capitale del terzo Relch, da parte delle truppe di Stalin, è stata la più sanguinosa campagna militare del Secondo conflitto mondiale. Le perdite dell'Armata Rossa superarono i 29 milioni, mentre quelle della Wehrmacht furono di oltre 10 milioni. Questo libro è il risultato di un lungo e approfondito lavoro di ricerca svolto dal due autori americani negli archivi ex sovietici, che sono stati parzialmente aperti agli storici dopo la dissoluzione dell'URSS avvenuta nel 1991. Fino a tale data gran parte del materiale di documentazione russo era classificato segreto e quindi non consultabile. Ogni fonte era controllata dalla censura, ed è per questo che gli studi precedenti si basavano in sostanza su materiali tedeschi più accessibili. Ciò che emerge è una storia profondamente umana di errori dei comandi, di adeguamento delle gerarchie militari alle pressioni esercitate dalla guerra, di distruzioni e sofferenze su scala gigantesca e di un'incredibile resistenza dei civili sia russi sia tedeschi. La comprensione di queste vicende è essenziale per poter correggere alcune errate generalizzazioni fatte in passato sulla seconda guerra mondiale.
