Sia che si tratti di una discussione da bar particolarmente animata o semplicemente lo spostare i contenitori del sale e del pepe sul tavolo di un autogrill, non vi è alcun dubbio che le tattiche calcistiche siano ormai diventate parte integrante della vita di tutti i giorni. Tuttavia, agli albori del football, quando questo sport veniva praticato esclusivamente a livello dilettantistico, era il caos a regnare, con i giocatori che continuavano a dribblare con la palla visto che, tra l'altro, il passaggio era ritenuto un'azione di gioco da "femminucce". Fu grazie agli scozzesi, dalla corporatura decisamente esile, i quali iniziarono a passare la palla per riuscire ad aggirare avversari fisicamente più prestanti, che il gioco poté evolversi verso una direzione prettamente tattica. Ne "La piramide rovesciata" Jonathan Wilson descrive come la tattica si è diffusa per tutto il globo terrestre. Come i sudamericani si scrollarono di dosso l'ordine coloniale per aggiungere la propria fantasia al gioco del calcio. Come il testimone fu poi restituito all'Europa centrale e a quella orientale, dove la tecnica individuale venne imbrigliata in una struttura di squadra. Gradatamente, uno schieramento aggressivo che prevedeva cinque giocatori a comporre la linea offensiva venne totalmente rovesciato, fino al punto in cui un modulo che prevede un solo attaccante, o persino nessun centravanti di ruolo, è diventato al giorno d'oggi una circostanza tutt'altro che insolita.
