Novembre 1943. Tra nubi di vapore il treno da Cracovia si ferma cigolando nella stazione di Auschwitz. Trasferito dal fronte russo a causa di una ferita alla gamba, l'ufficiale delle SS Paul Meissner dovrà occuparsi dell'amministrazione dei campi di concentramento. In particolare, dalle altissime gerarchie del Reich è arrivato l'ordine di innalzare il morale delle SS attraverso attività ludiche ma nello stesso tempo edificanti. Meissner decide così di fondare un club degli scacchi dove gli ufficiali possano sfidarsi. Finché nel campo inizia a serpeggiare una voce: tra i prigionieri c'è un ebreo francese, un certo Emil Clément detto ''l'Orologiaio'', che a scacchi è sostanzialmente imbattibile. In una spirale di orrore e sadismo, Clément è costretto alla sfida più pericolosa e terribile di sempre: giocare contro le SS mentre in palio c'è la vita o la morte di altri prigionieri. Vent'anni dopo, ormai scrittore di successo, Emil Clément partecipa a un torneo di scacchi ad Amsterdam. Non può sapere che proprio in quella città la sua strada si incrocerà di nuovo con quella di Paul Meissner. Cosa ci fa lì? E che cosa vuole ancora da lui? Una storia di amicizia e redenzione, che apre uno spiraglio di luce in uno dei periodi più bui dell'umanità.
