Martin Bora, l'investigatore di casi delicati per i servizi segreti della Wehrmacht, si trova a Mosca. Mancano settimane all'attacco di Hitler alla Russia di Stalin, e l'ufficiale è aggregato al corpo diplomatico della capitale sovietica immersa ancora nel clima del patto Ribbentrop-Molotov. In questa veste, gli arriva una strana richiesta da parte del diabolico Beria: recarsi a Creta, appena presa dai tedeschi, per procurare al raccapricciante capo dello spionaggio sovietico sessanta bottiglie di un pregiatissimo vino cretese. Invece, giunto nell'isola piena ancora dei segni di un bagno di sangue, l'ufficiale-detective è posto di fronte a un compito ben diverso. Una famiglia di civili è stata massacrata nella sua villa, a quanto pare da una pattuglia di paracadutisti tedeschi. I servizi vogliono vederci chiaro, non solo per scagionare i soldati accusati di crimini di guerra e impedire un incidente diplomatico, ma anche per prevenire l'intervento della Croce Rossa e tenere lontane le SS di Himmler, interessate alla strage. Infatti, la vittima principale è un residente svizzero, esperto di antichità e storia della razza ariana e membro dell'Ahnenerbe, la società fondata da Himmler per studiare il passato mitico della razza ariana e sovrintendere a tutte le ricerche ancestrali e archeologiche. L'imbarazzo è grande, ed enorme il mistero. Per scioglierlo, Bora dovrà farsi carico di un'indagine che lo porterà a muoversi lungo piste divergenti...

As usual in this outstanding series, it´s about so much more than a mystery. War,ethics, dilemmas,politics, and one of the best main characters around. It does drag a bit in the middle,and not even the symbolic meaning of "the quest" helps, but it´s still a solid 9/10.
I love Ben Pastor's Bora. He is a contemplative soldier who leads us thoughtfully through the bad times. I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did the others in the series that I have read. The plot dragged when the main character was roaming the Cretian countryside. I think this was supposed to evoke the Odyssey of Ulysses, but as I am unfamiliar with the story, the parallels were lost on me. Neverthe Leggi tutto
I wonder what the hell it was that we learnt in Spain. Surely we didn’t learn humility, something a man if not a soldier should become familiar with.
