La vera storia della bambina che fece da modella per una delle più celebri sculture di Degas. Edgar Degas era un pittore già celebre quando nel 1881 presentò al Salone degli Impressionisti una scultura intitolata "Piccola ballerina di quattordici anni". Una figura di cera in formato quasi naturale, coperta da un tutù e da un corpetto di vera stoffa, calzata con vere punte da danza e con veri capelli legati da un nastro di seta. La scultura, che rimase esposta per poche settimane in una teca di vetro prima che Degas la ritirasse per non mostrarla mai più, destò un enorme scandalo. L'espressione del viso della bambina, in particolare, fece gridare all'orrore: una piccola delinquente, fu definita dai più autorevoli critici, "un animale, un'assassina, una viziosa, un'azteca, sicuramente una prostituta". Perché Degas aveva esposto questa piccola ballerina? Perché l'aveva chiusa sotto una teca di vetro? Che cosa voleva dire al suo pubblico? E, soprattutto, chi era quella bambina? Sono le domande a cui Camille Laurens cerca una risposta, concentrandosi non solo sui dettagli della vicenda artistica di Degas e della piccola scultura, ma conducendo un'inchiesta serrata sulla breve e sfortunata vita di Marie Van Goethem, la piccola modella dell'artista. Un 'petit rat' dell'Opéra di Parigi, come erano chiamate le allieve del corpo di ballo del teatro, figure affascinanti e tragiche della Parigi ottocentesca, molto spesso destinate a una vita nella prostituzione. Da questa ricerca, che svela gli inganni dell'arte e le ipocrisie dello splendido mondo dello spettacolo, nasce un libro appassionato, venato tanto di commozione quanto di indignazione, nel quale si mescolano pagine di ricerca storica, ricostruzioni biografiche, pensieri sul femminismo e riflessione sociale.

This book was torture to read. It was 120 pages that could have been condensed into about 20. An art history senior thesis would probably do this topic more factual and concise justice without romanticizing poverty and prattling on about the facial features of criminals.
