Nel remoto villaggio di montagna in cui vivono, Li-yan e la sua famiglia allineano le loro vite al susseguirsi delle stagioni e alla coltivazione del tè. Per il popolo akha di cui fanno parte, la vita procede nello stesso modo da secoli, scandita dai ritmi della natura e dai rituali della tradizione. Ma quando sopraggiunge uno sconosciuto a bordo di una jeep, la prima automobile che gli abitanti del villaggio abbiano mai visto, tutto cambia. E la prima a cambiare è proprio Li-yan, una delle poche ragazze istruite che popolano il villaggio. Lentamente, Li-yan comincia a mettere in discussione i costumi tradizionali che hanno modellato la sua vita sin dalla nascita, finché non resta incinta di un uomo che i suoi genitori disprezzano. The book was good but it got slow there in the middle, like at some points I was totally into it and then it would just get tedious.
