Una donna dall’oscuro passato vive sola nella splendida casa costruita dall’uomo che l’ha abbandonata; una ragazza fa andare avanti e indietro il tempo in cui suo fratello terrorista ha vissuto insieme a lei; una bambina cresce troppo in fretta per sopperire alle mancanze della madre che arranca a furia di pasticche e lunghe dormite; una lepre, che sembra balzata fuori da una favola di Yeats, scorrazza nel giardino di un uomo e una donna desiderosi di intraprendere una nuova vita, mentre non molto lontano un’altra coppia prova a colmare i debiti con una coltivazione clandestina di hashish.
Storie diversissime, ma è sempre l’Irlanda, violenta e florida, verdissima e oscura, che si affaccia prepotente dalle pagine di Louise Kennedy. Con uno stile asciutto e poetico, duro e insieme evocativo, l’autrice ci restituisce l’immagine di un paese brillante, ubriaco e feroce, dove lo splendore e la mutevolezza dei luoghi fanno da sfondo a rapporti umani ormai logori, dai trascorsi quasi insondabili e caratterizzati da dialoghi scarni.
E così queste storie sembrano parlarsi, riecheggiare l’una dentro l’altra, in un amaro gioco di riflessi e strane risonanze che trasformano la lettura in un enorme specchio deformante. Sullo sfondo idilliaco di una natura descritta con rara precisione e vividezza, si stagliano creature dolenti, ciniche, ironiche, ferite e umiliate dalla vita, personaggi che tradiscono, uccidono e nascondono, pur provando – con cieca disperazione – a continuare ad amare.
