Ispirato a una storia vera
In una mattina come tante del 1943, Helene Hannemann sta accompagnando i suoi figli a scuola, quando la polizia tedesca la intercetta e la costringe a tornare sui propri passi. Prende corpo così la sua paura più oscura: gli agenti delle ss intendono infatti prelevare i suoi cinque bambini e suo marito, di etnia rom. Anche se è tedesca, Helene si rifiuta di essere separata dalla famiglia e decide di affrontare insieme ai suoi cari un destino che non avrebbe potuto immaginare nemmeno negli incubi più spaventosi. Dopo una terribile marcia attraverso il continente, Helene e la sua famiglia arrivano ad Auschwitz e si ritrovano a essere diretti testimoni degli orrori nel campo di concentramento nazista. Suo marito Johann viene portato via, lei e i figli invece vengono assegnati alla sezione del campo destinata ai rom. Helene, in quanto tedesca e infermiera, ha però un trattamento privilegiato e lo spietato dottor Mengele le propone di gestire un asilo per i piccoli prigionieri. Fisicamente ed emotivamente provata, Helene diventerà per loro un rifugio: con la sua vita darà una straordinaria prova di gentilezza e altruismo in grado di illuminare il momento più buio della storia dell’umanità.

I finished this one a couple days ago. It is an emotional read but a true story. I loved the authors note which told what was true and what was not true. I cried and needed tissues. It was a depressing read but it really did happen so its not going to be unicorns and rainbows. The author did so well Leggi tutto

Auschwitz Lullaby is yet another heartbreaking and jarring novel depicting the horrors perpetrated by the Nazis.
