Whale Bay, capodanno 1986. Una donna di nome Vera Gusev chiama la centrale di polizia da un telefono pubblico sostenendo di aver trovato un bambino solo nel bosco nei pressi di un lago ghiacciato. Il giovane agente Lewis si reca sul posto, ma quando arriva di Vera e del bambino non c’è traccia. Vede soltanto la macchina della donna, con le portiere spalancate e il motore ancora acceso, e poi Scout, il suo cane. Che cosa è accaduto, quindi, quel primo giorno del gennaio 1986?
Sono i sette protagonisti, tra cui la stessa Vera, a raccontare la storia della scomparsa: l’agente di polizia, il ventiquattrenne Lewis; il marito della donna, Denny, tormentato dai sensi di colpa per non essere riuscito a dimostrare alla moglie la profondità del suo affetto; Jesse, il bambino stesso che per ultimo ha visto Vera in vita; sua madre Evelina, il padre Leo e il fratellino Dmitri. E se, inevitabilmente, all’inizio i sospetti si appuntano sul marito, quando al disgelo il corpo di Vera viene ritrovato nel lago, la polizia archivia il caso come un incidente.
Questa versione dei fatti non convince Denny, che vorrebbe un confronto con l’ultima persona ad aver visto sua moglie: il piccolo Jesse, che a quanto pare sa bene come sono andate le cose, e porta dentro di sé il fardello di un terribile segreto.
Con uno stile asciutto, sobrio, persino spietato nella lucidità con cui si insinua nella mente dei personaggi, e calibrando saggiamente la quantità di informazioni fornite al lettore per tenere alta l’attenzione, Marjorie Celona scrive un meraviglioso page turner, un thriller ritmato e impossibile da posare, ma anche un romanzo sulla famiglia, sulla possibilità di nuovi inizi, sul prezzo degli errori che spesso compiamo con l’illusione di fare il bene di chi amiamo.

This is an immersive read, plunging us into the lives of everyone involved with the sudden death of an extraordinary woman and how that event affects each of them as their lives go forward.
